SNMP, Simple Network Management Protocol, is used in Network Management applications like HP-Openview. It
consists of a set of messages for getting and setting configution options on
Network Elements. It also provides messages for spontaneous alarm reporting
called traps.
- SOID
- Sytem Object ID. Identifies SNMP object in tree structure.
Organisations can get a branch of the tree for their products. - MIB
- Management Information Base. Maps SOID and options from SNMP messages
to the Management system. - Agent
- Intelligence on Network Elements supporting SNMP.
- Manager
- Applications to send and receive SNMP messages.
A SNMP topology scan reads the ARP-cache and reqests the ARP-cache from
all nodes it finds (first from routers then from nodes).
