NIS, Network Information Services, is a way to share information between computers in a local network (domain).
The original NIS could only handle a simple flat domain. NIS+ has better scalability and security. At antiperfect.org NIS is not used and with NIS+ we have no experience at all.
NIS does a broadcast to find the NIS-server for its domain, any (fake) computer reporting as such is accepted as NIS-master.
NIS is most used to share passwd, group, hosts and automount files in a domain.
